Lovely spring day yesterday, perfect for digging trial pits! It took about 4 hours to do both pits, including breaks and various other distractions. Both pits revealed sand down to at least 2m - which is exactly what I expected, and exactly what we wanted to see :)
This means our foundations can be a nominal 900mm below ground level. I was half tempted to keep digging to see if I could find the underlying clay - but what prevented me was the combination of a) knowing it could well be several metres further down b) a 2m deep trial pit is already dangerous enough without digging out any more and c) not really being bothered.
