After playing around with the T-piece I bought for connecting the garden tap, I think I've joined the mains water pipe incorrectly to the extension piece, meaning we'll have to dig up a bit of our drive again. In better news, we've re-fitted the bedroom door, and I've made an appointment to see a mortgage advisor tomorrow about borrowing more money, which is one option for the extra few thousand we need to finish the house. Currently we have borrowed this from my parents, but that was only ever intended to be a short term arrangement.
